Joyousbrush Club 2015 Spring registration

Kincaid Elementary After School Club 2015 Spring

Joyousbrush Painting by Tehwan Tso

We paint for joy, for self discovery, for creativity and for resonance with others. We explore nature and delight in its wonder.  Joyousbrush Club aims to capture such wonder on paper. This set of painting techniques helps us to stroke more deliberately, to practice more purposefully, to try more courageously, to paint more confidently, to reflect more honestly, to create more enthusiastically, to express more freely and to share more joyfully.

The Joyous Brush Club incorporates the classic oriental brush stroke techniques retained through the ages and the contemporary exploration of water color effect on rice paper.

This class is open to all students from 2nd to 5th grades.  We will be painting beauty and wonders of nature. The class tuition is $180 for 12 90-minutes lessons and $30 for class supplies; this will include all material used in class including art bags and portfolio.   Optional $20 will allow the students to take home the brushes they use in class (2 small, 2 large), color mixing plate, brush rest, a set of primary colors & white and 10 sheets of rice paper.

Tehwan Tso demonstrates Chinese brush painting in Cobb County schools through Artist in School program.  She offers workshops to Georgia schools through Woodruff Arts Arts for Learning program. Lesson 9 Sun flowers

The same leaves can be applied to Sun Flower.  So we take the liberty to paint them in order to obtain more practice for brush stroke sake.

Lesson 8 Hydrangea continued

The students worked hard on their hydrangea paintings since there are many strokes.  Here is a glimpse of our gallery at school, if you have not yet visited, please make time for a short visit.

Lesson 7 Hydrangea in color

This painting is done in color still aiming at leave practice.  The flowers from buds to full broom are demonstrated afterwards to demonstrate how they may grow in relation to the leaves.

Lesson 6 Hydrangea leaves

Hydrangea leaves stroke practice in black and white.
Since the leave structure is so basic in many floral paintings, I take the time to orient the students in obtaining a degree of command of comfort level to always not shy away from leaves and their cluster.

Lesson 5 Peach blossom

We applied the same techniques of painting the Cherokee roses to peach blossom.  The flowers are smaller and they grow out of the branches.

lesson 4 pink Cherokee roses

We finished our yellow roses and started our pink roses.  The flowers are oriented in various directions.  The students are challenged to turn their flowers in their design.  We will complete the painting next week.

lesson 3 cherokee Roses in color

We have been studying the various stroke techniques of the elements in a rose painting.  The leaves with vain, the flower, the buds, stem and thorns.  Now we have to put them together logically.  You have to convince people you have studied roses in its natural form.  So do study them whenever you have the opportunity.  This is the lifelong habit artist acquire and delight in.   Then render a second appearance with your brush. This iteration completes the learning cycle.

lesson 2 Leaves and buds in color

To put leaves and stem together, you first have to know how to grow the stem in your mind.  Some leaves have to be placed in the front of the stem, and they have to be arranged in such a way that they will all be able to connect together in a logical and beautiful way.  Below is a student sample of how to grow leaves logically on the stem.

lesson 1 stroke study

This is our first lesson for the floral studies.  I introduced the brush stroke technique to paint leaves, flower buds, stem and thorns.  These are the strokes we are going to use to paint roses.   Next week we will use color to talk about composition of the leaves, leave cluster, stem and how to connect them.

Lesson 11 Crabs

Dear Creative friends:

As we wind down this semester.  I want to thank you for signing your students up for Joyousbrush Club.  Each week we explore a sea creature in its shape and form, it's anatomy and their functions.  We paint them with personalized best effort strokes.

We painted crabs this past week.  I have updated the blogspot for your viewing.   http://joyousbrushclubatkincaid.blogspot.com/   I have send home your students' porfolio.  I hope you enjoy going through them and share them in your Thanksgiving gatherings.

I am delighted to hear your students say"  It looked really hard, but it's really not after you do it"  What better way to build their confidence through painting.

Happy Thanksgiving

Lesson 10 Octopus

No body understands the fun we are having in painting these sea creatures.  I usually give my students some guava candies for encouragement.  No body cared about Guava candies today.  They are totally absorbed in their octopus.  We talk about the long stroke of their legs.  We even sing to help with our long unbroken strokes.  How these legs can create interesting design, perspective and interaction.Do check out their paintings in school hall way.

Lesson 9 Lobsters

Do stop by our gallery in school hall way.  You can see each student's uniqueness in their personal take from the same instruction. Besides learning the autonomy of the lobster, the brush strokes,  we explored layout, background color and under the sea abstract design.  At the end of each lesson, I am so content to see how satisfied your students are. You can read their excitements in their paintings.

Lesson 8 Crawl fish

I took some crawl fish from a Chinese seafood restaurant and brought it to our Joyousbrush class for sample.  It awaken the students' appetite to look, to marvel, to wonder, to question, and to joke about.  How inquisitive minds learn.  How nature delights.  How satisfying it is to unite the mind and the nature through the exercise of painting.

Lesson 7 Fish painting fun

I want to invite you in to see how your students are doing painting their fish.  They did not start with an outline, they painted with their brush straight on their rice paper.  This exercise develops their imagery process confidence.  Documenting what you know, and observe to know.

They have the freedom to play with the color for the background.  They are commanding their personal expression in their paintings.

Lesson 6 Godfish side view

We continued with our goldfish, this week we studied the sideview of the gold fish.  We will spend another week practice the flowy side stroke of the tail and fin.  Your students are having a great time painting away.  Challenged, yes.  But delightful and focused.

Lesson 5 Goldfish

We painted goldfish today.  We start with the top view, then we will paint side view and front view in the subsequent lessons.  We enjoy our painting time together, it is so special. Thank you for sharing your students with me to realize joyousbrush painting fun.
